    Recalls for 2016 BMW Hybrid

    2016 BMW I3
NHTSA Campaign ID:FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
    Manufacturer:BMW of North America, LLC
    Manufacture Dates:03/05/2014 - 12/30/2016
    Potential Units Affected:19130

    Defect Description:

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2014-2017 i3 REx hybrid electric vehicles. The fuel tank vent line may rub against the ribbed wire protection sleeve of the battery positive (B+) cable, creating a hole in the vent line and causing a fuel vapor leak.

    Consequence:

A fuel vapor leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.

    Action:

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the fuel vent line, replacing it as necessary, and install a clip to prevent it from chafing, free of charge. The recall beganApril 3, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
    2016 BMW I3
    NHTSA Campaign ID:AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
    Manufacturer:BMW of North America, LLC
    Manufacture Dates:09/01/2013 - 11/14/2017
    Potential Units Affected:32000

    Defect Description:

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2014-2018 BMW i3 electric and hybrid electric vehicles. Unbelted, small adult, drivers may be at a higher risk of neck injury in the event of a frontal crash. These vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

    Consequence:

During a frontal impact, unbelted, small adult, drivers could be at a higher risk of neck injury.

    Action:

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will update the Driver air bag control unit software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin January 8, 2018. Owners may contact BMW customer service at the dedicated i3 recall number 1-855-269-3361.
    2016 BMW X5
    NHTSA Campaign ID:ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
    Manufacturer:BMW of North America, LLC
    Manufacture Dates:07/29/2015 - 09/09/2015
    Potential Units Affected:8

    Defect Description:

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2016 X5 xDrive40e vehicles manufactured July 29, 2015, to September 9, 2015. The affected vehicles have a Digital Motor Electronic (DME) control unit that may have a loose electrical ground cable, possibly causing an under-voltage condition which would result in the transmission shifting to neutral.

    Consequence:

If the vehicle unexpectedly shifts to neutral, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

    Action:

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will tighten the ground cable, free of charge. The recall began February 6, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
    2016 BMW X5
NHTSA Campaign ID:ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL:GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE (EGR VALVE)
    Manufacturer:BMW of North America, LLC
    Manufacture Dates:05/07/2013 - 06/19/2017
    Potential Units Affected:44368

    Defect Description:

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2018 BMW 328d and 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon and 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d and 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler. If the EGR cooler leaks internally, the coolant can mix with diesel engine soot. The high EGR temperatures may result in these particles possibly smoldering and melting the intake manifold.

    Consequence:

The melting intake manifold can increase the risk of a fire.

    Action:

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the EGR cooler as necessary. If a leak has already occurred, the engine intake manifold will also be replaced. These repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began May 13, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
